Responsible and sustainable fishing

Our main activity is herring and mackerel fishing in the North Sea & the North Atlantic

Astrid fishing – responsible and sustainable fishing

We are engaged in pelagic fishing. Pelagic fishing with purse seine or trawl is a gentle and responsible way of fishing, which keeps the environmental impact at a minimum.

We adhere the Pelagic Codex and we are certified by MSC (Marine Stewartship Counsil).

Facts and figures

Pelagic fishing

The most important pelagic species are herring, mackerel and sprat, which are found in large, always moving  shoals. Modern onboard echo sounders and sonar equipment locate the fish several miles away. When the fish has been caught, it is pumped into the fish tanks of the vessel, where it is kept in refrigerated sea water, which constantly is recirculated at a temperature of -0,5 degr.. Cel. Discharging is carried out by vacuum pumping directly into the onshore production plant. Pelagic fishing is carried out without contact between the fishing gear and the sea-bed.

Our vessels

The Astrid-activity in Denmark was established by merger with existing Danish fishing companies and direct purchase of smaller vessels holding quotas.

Efficient pelagic vessels call for large investments, and full adjustment of catching capacity to a certain fish quota takes time and many different considerations.
